Reminders -- in Remix and in real life
Apr. 24th, 2008 12:21 amFirst of all, may I direct your attention to the story of mine that was remixed by a currently anonymous author:
A Really Bad Idea (The Perfectly Good Reasons remix)
I was intrigued to see which fic of mine the assignee would pick to remix, but I definitely wouldn't have thought of A Really Bad Idea! For those who aren't familiar with it, it's basically a shaggy-dog story, written shortly after HBP came out to send up the Harmonian Love Potion of Doom theories that were so prevalent at the time. The remixer decided to treat it instead as a serious situation, and it made an interesting contrast when looking at things from Ginny's POV rather than Harry's -- a take that I thought worked nicely, and which seems to me to be exactly the sort of thing you're supposed to do in a remix. (Yes, love potions in serious stories can be very iffy, agreed, but I think this one managed to stay the right side of the line.)
I'd be interested to see if anyone guesses which remix was mine -- past experience of anon fests suggests that there are recognisable habits there, sadly.
And talking about recognisable habits: when I watched a bit of the snooker earlier this evening, I was amazed to see someone I haven't seen in ages doing interviews -- one Rob Walker. I remember him well from university days -- he was elected President of the Exeter University Guild of Students (student union) in early 1997. (That was the occasion when I, as a humble(*) fresher, unexpectedly inherited the Senior Elections Officer position a few weeks before the main sabbatical Guild officer elections, which suited me just fine -- great fun if you're the kind of geeky person who actually enjoys doing that sort of thing.) It's not his first appearance on TV: if anyone remembers an episode of TFI Friday featuring a Man Who Can Make His Stomach Look Like An Elephant -- well, that was Rob. :) He seems less hyper now though!
That makes two fellow students from my time there who I now know are in the entertainment business -- the other being Will Young (winner of Pop Idol, for non-UK readers) -- who worked for Rag out of the Guild office opposite mine, and is familiar in a yeah-I-think-that-bloke-I-vaguely-remember-must-have-been-him sort of way. Anyway, it's nice to see an old face, especially as I've lost touch with the friends I had there (a bad habit of mine).
(*) Well, at first, anyway.
