Summary: Pure crack, but lots of fun.
I'd better write this post before reading the rest of thewank fan reactions. But basically, I enjoyed it more than I thought I might given the silly-sounding plot. OK, the plot basically was silly, but carried off with panache, and it's good to start the season with something a little bit lighter.
Since I'm among the people who actually liked Donna as an entertaining character in The Runaway Bride, I was looking forward to seeing her again in the new season. Having her seeking out the Doctor was a bit iffy -- I'm kind of taking the writers' word for it that we're not going to go all shippy again here -- but did at least get over the coincidence factor of him running into her again by giving a reason for it. Donna's a bit calmer and maturer in this, obviously, but still the same larger-than-life person, and Catherine Tate plays her well.
The slimming pill = alien breeding device plot was a bit thin, I suppose (sorry), but fun, and gave plenty of opportunities for moments of pure cracktastic comedy gold. The cute little Play-Doh alien kids seem just made for spin-off toys -- the scene in which thousands of them were wandering about the streets going home was hysterical. Great stuff, as was the opening part of the episode in which the Doctor and Donna kept missing each other, and the 'are we interrupting anything?' moment when Miss Foster sees them miming to each other. Sarah Lancashire did a splendid job of keeping a relatively straight face when playing her.
Miss Foster as a character and the way the Doctor treats the journalist? Hmm, I suspect fannish annoyance at this. I also suspect the journalist may be turning up again in later episodes.
And on that subject -- it's hard to avoid spoilers sometimes when even the newspapers print them, so obviously I knew Rose was going to be in the new series. On the other hand, I hadn't been spoiled for her appearance here -- a really good and unexpected twist that announced "well lookee here, series-long arc comin' right up!" Given that it had been publicised so much, it's probably sensible to get it out of the way early on.
All in all, this looks promising.
