As you doubtless know, my fic output tends to be largely gen, and although I've written the occasional pure het fic and the even more occasional slash fic, it's relatively rare for the characters in them to actually be shown getting down 'n' dirty. And the stories display a thoroughly pedantic obsession with canon compatibility.

However, I've been brooding over a number of posts that have appeared on [livejournal.com profile] metafandom recently, and have come to the conclusion that I may have been taking a suboptimal approach to fic writing. The style above does nothing to challenge established orthodoxies, is needlessly exclusionary about a topic of major importance, and it doesn't bring in nearly as many readers.

Basically, UR DOIN IT RONG.

So from now on, all further fictional output on this journal (and of course [livejournal.com profile] snorkfics) will be exclusively NC-17. While it may occasionally contain pairings that are considered canon where these are of general interest (e.g. Remus/Sirius), I will be concentrating initially on exploring the more outré ships. As a token of this, here's a little ficlet that I threw together this morning:

Title: Harry's Ideal Family
Rating: NC-17 (duh)
Length: 1,500 words
Summary: Harry has always wanted to be part of a family like this ...
Ships: Harry/Ron, Harry/Bill, Harry/Charlie, Harry/Percy, Harry/Fred/George, Harry/Ron/Bill/Charlie/Percy/Fred/George/Errol
Warnings: I don't do warnings. Read at your own risk.

I'm sure you didn't take it seriously. :D

Drat! I was going to do something like this! I guess I'll just have to settle for setting my Facebook status to "I'm pregnant," which has already fooled my brother's girlfriend, lol.

I am very distressed by this. It seems to me that you are making a joke out of a very serious issue. The oppression of creative freedom of expression by self-appointed canon-nazis is more prevalent in the Potter fandom than any other, and threatens to stultify further development in the fandom. How do you think someone would feel, about to post her first non-canon-pairing (or debated canon pairing - I don't think there can be any doubt that Harry/Hermione is canon at a deeper level) reading your 'joke' post mocking her creative intent? If you don't want to explore the liminal power of Bellatrix/Ginny, fine, but don't mock those of us who feel passionately that these ships are what we are in fandom for. I am disgusted by your so-called April Fool, and shall be defriending you forthwith.

It's true that many people find it hard to see the truth of Herminone/Harry - JKR is subtle in her message. But the liminal qualities of Bellatrix/Ginny? I mean, Molly Weasley's "Not my daughter, you bitch" can surely only be read as Molly's prejudiced rejection of the older woman's sapphic symbolism and here, I'm afraid, JKR demonstrating her own inherent conservatism and bigoted denial of femmeslash.

Also, can Harry/Ron/Bill/Charlie/Percy/Fred/George/Errol really be considered to be pushing the boundaries these days? With the advent of [livejournal.com profile] owlihotornot such things are verging on mainstream.

I was originally surprised that Harry/Ron, Harry/Bill, Harry/Charlie, Harry/Percy, Harry/Fred/George, Harry/Ron/Bill/Charlie/Percy/Fred/George/Errol only took 1500 words! But then, that's a lot of work for poor Harry! ;) Happy April!
