As I said to fernwithy below, it's not clear what algorithm it uses to processe these -- especially if you have a lot of short posts, maybe?

Heh, no idea - I have semi-lenghty posts I think, but maybe they're just very well suited for the agegroups 7-12. Wouldn't have thought it but hey, surprises are nice ;)

I ran the same chapter of the same story through this, just once posted on SQ and once at Humongous Bighead. Same text. HB came out elementary school. SQ came out high school. I am confuddled.

Hm. I suppose the way it must work is to follow all the links on the page you give it -- so at SQ it would be taking in a bunch of other site stuff that isn't anything to do with your story, while at HB there's only yours there?

It doesn't say what algorithm it uses -- I'm presuming it runs it through one of the standard ones that take into account average word and post length, word choice etc. Then again, it's a bit ad hoc -- I saw a report of one which rated 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' far harder to read than an essay on 'The Spiritual Value of Art'. :)

I'm more confused now. I went to a page of juvenile politcal cartoons--in other words, all images, as far as what the computer would trace--and it scored "College (Undergrad)." Maybe all the archive dates made the computer think it was all about math, and therefore harder?

Interesting -- maybe they had ALT text that was picked up? Or what little surrounding text there was sounded 'harder'?

I'd guess that the people who set it up would claim that it was only supposed to work on blogs (i.e. because most of the material included or linked to came from one person) and therefore gives random results on other types of site?
