Lyrics: The last one was Kelly Clarkson's Avril-sounding hit Never Again from earlier this year, spotted by ladybracknell, sparkly_stuff, and browneydweasley. This next one may or may not be appropriate -- the band are in the birthday girl's interests, but their stuff, while excellent, tends to be a bit damn depressing. :) Anyway, this is a lyric that always jumps out at you:

Memo to self again: I really must make more posts that aren't birthday wishes/lyric quizzes! Actually, while on the subject of music, maybe y'all can help. For the 'connection' round in the pub quiz I'm setting next Sunday, it's six songs with the name of a breed of dog in either the title or the name of the artist. At present I've got four reasonably big hits:

Pointer Sisters -- I'm So Excited
Greyhound -- Black and White
Simon & Garfunkel -- The Boxer
Bloodhound Gang -- The Bad Touch

but then only three songs that aren't ideal for various reasons:

Ferlin Husky -- Gone (50s song, not a UK hit anyway)
Smashing Pumpkins -- Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (instrumental album title track)
Korgis -- Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime (wrong spelling)

So ... can anyone possibly think of a song or songs that would work better than the latter three, plz?

'Fraid I've got nothing sensible, although I racked my brains.

(If you weren't looking for species, anything by Snoop Dogg would make people laugh! And it's probably too obscure, but the band Belle & Sebastian link in with that children's cartoon series about the Pyreneean Mountain Dog. But as for serious contenders - I drew a blank. You'd think there'd be loads...)

Yeah, there are lots of artists and songs with just 'dog' in them, but that doesn't seem to be playing fair (as well as giving a bit too much of a hint). Ah well. I did get a list of dog breeds off Wikipedia and run through them, but that was the best I could come up with -- apparently there's a breed of dog called a 'Jimmy', which would obviously be easy to find a song for, but hardly any easier for people to spot the connection.

The problem with these connection rounds is always finding the last one or two! Currently stuck on Hitch-Hiker's Guide songs, inspired by this post's lyric! 'Ford' and 'Arthur' are easy, as is Level 42 -- add in 'Paranoid Android' and 'Heart of Gold' and that's five, but then ... I suppose 'Planet Earth' would do at a pinch.

I thought or Marvin Gaye, but then that would be using Marvin twice if I've already got Paranoid Android. What I really need, of course, is a song called Golgafrincham Ark Fleet or something. :)

I couldn't think of a 'dolphin' song, but now I check my database I find that apparently I do have one! It's a Byrds track called Dolphin's Smile -- unfortunately not a hit, and the bit where they actually sing the title is rather quiet. I'll have to try boosting that section in Audacity.

Damn, I never thought of that one ... Ah well, people would only think it was by Pulp and get confused. I went with lazy_neutrino's suggestion of the Beatles Hey Bulldog in the end.

Yeah, I thought of that -- and Bird Dog by the Everley Brothers -- but again, it's a type of dog rather than a breed ... I may be pedantic, but I tend to feel changing subject on the contestants part-way isn't quite fair play. :(

Blimey, that's an obscure Beatles track -- not one I was familiar with. However, it's a thought -- the soundtrack CD is about eleven quid though, so I'll download the YouTube promo video and see if it's possible to rip the audio from that. :) (Not something I've tried before, so if you happen to know how ...)

Brilliant! I'm astonished about the Spaniels - it's one of my dad's favourite songs, so I just assumed it had been massive and everyone knew it!

I have a number of Dad's old 45s. Many of them either didn't chart, or were minor hits round about 1960. (Some years ago I sorted them into 'good stuff' and 'rubbish' according to my own taste. Guess which ones mostly got lost at some point during moves?)
