Jossed (Joed? JKRed? Rowlinged?) fics
Jul. 24th, 2007 01:02 amBorrowing an idea from
dolorous_ett -- a roundup of what was and wasn't jossed by DH among my fics (all of which are on my fic journal
snorkfics):
Incidentally, I did consider a sort of Plotbunny Mourning Post to lament those ideas that never got off the ground before DH, and now either won't work or need extensive revision -- maybe later. Anyone got any of those? :)
Apart from the first, in reverse chronological order of first posting.
Nymphadora Tonks and the Liquor of Jacmel
Bizarrely, this came through almost unscathed as far as details were concerned, apart from minor fixable ones like the pet names Ted and Andromeda use for Tonks, and the fact that she not only knew Moody, she was his protégé. And I even cheered when Ted turned up with a couple of goblins, talking knowledgeably about old vaults, as he was supposed to work at Gringotts in this. Unfortunately, having the protagonist killed off has pretty much zapped my enthusiasm for doing a sequel -- and anyway, I suspect that this was jossed at a more fundamental level anyway, in that the characterisation of Tonks was essentially based not only on OotP but the early part of OotP where she appears most often -- and now looks a lot different to the character we saw in HBP and DH.
Twenty Shipping Drabbles
A few are now unworkable or implausible (Hagrid/Tonks, Snape/Libatius Borage, Ron/Demelza, that sort of thing), a lot still work -- but then they were meant to be mostly crack anyway.
Unmarked
Well, I never really expected that the post-HBP stuff in this would survive DH -- although up to then it still fits. I can't really tweak the resolution though as it depends on Lucius switching sides early on in the DH year. Also, I probably made him a lot stronger than he ended up looking in DH.
Desperate Measures
A Horcrux-hunt genfic, so was always going to be completely clobbered, really.
The Open Sea and the Sky
A genfic set well in the past about extremely minor characters from QTTA with no connection to the main plot, so was always likely to survive unscathed -- I can't think of anything that contradicted it.
The Right Time
Ron/Hermione first time that had the Trio going back to school while looking for the Horcruxes, 12GP still the Order HQ, and the action taking place just before Christmas. Never stood much chance of being consistent, really.
That's What Friends Are For
HBP-era Ravenclaw friendship fic with Cho and Roger, works fine except that I had the Ravenclaw common room using an ordinary password.
Battles with Basilisks
This was a deliberate AU fic anyway, so what the hell.
Preventive Medicine
Snape's unorthodox approach to treating wizarding STDs. Nothing contradicted it ...
Blood Lines
Griselda Marchbanks making a speech about the war and its context a couple of years afterwards -- has negative rather than positive contradictions, in that she doesn't mention any of the specifics of the Ministry behaviour in DH when it would have been appropriate to.
Change For Me
Remus/Tonks with past Remus/Lily, very angsty git!Remus -- when I wrote this the characterisation was meant to be a stretch (and was rejected at a couple of sites because of that), but now looks like the most accurate portrayal of the character I've ever done. :)
Dangerous Driving
Ernie Prang being pulled this way and that as he has to be an informer -- you know, I think this one actually still works? Even the Rookwood being taken to Azkaban part wasn't contradicted.
Twenty Sibling Drabbles
Mostly set in the past -- can't think of anything which doesn't fit, but hey, they're only drabbles anyway.
Introduction to The Invisible Book of Invisibility
Still OK if you assume Dumbledore wasn't going to mention the cloak Hallow.
Indistinguishable
I'm afraid my main reaction to George losing an ear and then Fred getting killed was 'bugger, this josses Indistinguishable'. Yes, I'm a bad person. I've always been a bit ambivalent about the Twins, although basically coming down on the side of liking them.
You Tell Her
Well, what they (Harry and Ron) were telling her (Hermione) was deliberately out of left field, so I'd have been amazed if this had been anything like accurate! Even the ancillary details of the Horcrux Quest weren't guessed right.
Honour Amongst Thieves
Mundungus and the Crown Jewels post-war -- yeah, I think this is OK! (Not that anybody reads it much.)
The Wolf Covers Its Tracks
Post-war Alive!Remus (with Tonks killed by Greyback), so it's gone.
The Hunter
Kid!Luna -- I used different names for her parents, but I can easily fix that.
Sleeping With The Enemy
Hermione/Ron/Lavender triangulation -- still OK.
Not Given Up Yet
Millicent from PS/SS to HBP -- yeah, still just about OK, I think, although Crabbe and Goyle in this are probably too nice.
Can't I Like Girls Too?
Deliberately intended as 'canon-compatible crack', if that makes sense. Amazingly, still works on that basis, I think.
A Really Bad Idea
Another one that was basically written as AU in the first place, so doesn't apply.
Something's Happened
The Prime Minister after HBP -- still OK.
Second Thoughts
Ramblings of the Sorting Hat -- still OK.
Toujours Pur
Walburga Black with a crush on Troy -- actually still OK, I think (I don't think what we found out about Regulus specifically contradicts it).
Different Paths
Pomfrey/Macnair for a challenge -- as canon as it ever was.
Conspiracy Theory
Satire based on real history, almost totally OCs -- so unaffected (heh, even the Grindelwald references still fit).
Whatever Gets You Through The Night
Remus mourning Sirius after OotP -- made rather iffy by HBP, but not any iffier by DH.
Whatever You Say, Blood's Important
Already jossed by HBP, but it's only here for sentimental reasons as my first attempt at fanfic anyway.

Date: 2007-07-24 01:00 pm (UTC)I'm so glad that NTLJ is still more or less canon - and, as I've said elsewhere, I think you're being awfully hard on yourself about minor elements of characterisation. After all, our earliest encounters with in OotP are closest in time to when your action takes place...
The other useful thing about this post is that I've realised there are still so many of your stories I haven't read - a situation I must rectify...

Date: 2007-07-25 02:47 pm (UTC)It's not that prolific really -- it's over a three year period. I'm in awe of (and maybe a bit envious of too) authors like
