Excuse me while I squee
Jun. 30th, 2007 08:02 pmSo Last of the Time Lords wasn't The Mind of Evil after all.
The Mutants! With better special effects. Well, at least the sequence of the Doctor turning from a small twisted thingy into a glowing kickass energy creature was. And those labour camps were right out of World's End or Day of the Daleks. Old school echoes FTW.
OK, maybe I'm reading too much into this.
Anyway, that certainly was a rollercoaster and lived up to the first two parts of the trilogy (by no means guaranteed, as anyone who can remember disappointing conclusions to certain Star Trek two-parters can testify). It certainly hit the right buttons for me, from some excellent character work with the Doctor, the Master, and the Jones family, and grand sweeping power plays. Simm was brilliantly insane as the Master (and I presume that benailed hand scene at the end was intended to allow the producers to bring him back if they wanted), and Lucy as just ... Lucy worked well given the final shooting scene. And I can't remember who theorised Jack = Face of Boe (I know I saw it somewhere this last few days), but give that person a spotter's badge!
The way in which Martha Saves The World was unexpected and yes, a bit corny, but still effective, and her final realisation worked for me and will hopefully reduce the amount of fannish griping about her crush. Although to be honest I never had a problem with that theme -- no, it didn't get as much exploration as we might have liked, but when you come right down to it the amount of stuff you can fit into one 45 minute episode is limited (just read a script sometime and compare it with the length of your average fanfic), and it's been made pretty clear that there was stuff happening in between episodes.
It also hit the reset button, of course, but since I couldn't see any way in which that wasn't going to happen, I was OK with it. It would really screw with the producers' ability to have modern-day settings in Series 4+ if they'd basically trashed the whole planet and left it that way in-story.
So, in short, I've really learned to love new Who over the course of this series, roll on the next one!

Date: 2007-06-30 11:07 pm (UTC)I have fairly big reservations about Messianic! Doctor, but I will have to brood on this further. I did really like the final scenes between the Master and the Doctor - though I'm now firmly convinced that rather than dying, he possessed or swapped bodies with Lucy.

Date: 2007-07-01 10:57 am (UTC)I hand you (once again) the Scary Prediction King award for spotting the Utopians would be the Toclafane. It wouldn't have even occurred to me if I hadn't read your post yesterday!
It's a shame John Simm as the Master had to die but I suppose after all that he could hardly escape. And an actor as busy as him could hardly spend the next series sitting in the corner of the TARDIS sniping however funny it would have been...
I can't quite get over Jack as the Face of Bo! I keep want to dig out old episodes and look for similarities! I understand why he didn't say anything to the Doctor (timelines and all that) but it still seems slightly odd. Mind you though - I'm sure one of the Satellite Five news stories way back in the first series was something about the Face of Bo giving birth!
And finally - one has to wonder how the heck the prow of the Titanic could break though the TARDIS wall when it has held out stellar explosions and massive forces of enemies before now! But I just loved the Doctor's final resigned and horrified "what?"
Looking forward to Christmas!

I reckon they're taking her to Torchwood to try and save that show from itself. I wonder how many aliens they'll make the poor girl sleep with? One of each gender at least on past form and probably Owen *shudders*....
