snorkackcatcher: (Happy Birthday)

Lyrics: the last one was What A Crazy World We're Livin' In by Joe Brown and the Bruvvers from 1962, spotted by [livejournal.com profile] gloryforever (I didn't expect his stuff to have been heard in Mexico!) and [livejournal.com profile] lazy_neutrino.

This one is even older -- I first heard of it when I saw the aforementioned Joe Brown performing it on some old black and white documentary about railways shown on Channel 4. If anyone knows the date and origins more precisely than I do, I'd like to know!

I was wearing corduroy britches
Digging ditches, pulling switches
Dodging bitches
I was working on the railway

In eighteen hundred and forty two
From Hartlepool I moved to Crewe
And I found meself a job to do
Workin' on the railway, the railway
I'm weary of the railway
(c. 1890s?)

Couldn't give you the title, but I do remember watching a childnre's education programme featuring it at Middle School. I made up a rhyme to the tune, listing the Tudor and Stewart monarchs and their dates.
