Lyrics: The last one was Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen by the Sea by the Four Lads (USA) or Max Bygraves (UK) from 1954. [livejournal.com profile] nineveh_uk knew it and even how to spell it! (It's one of those songs that I find have a certain bizarre and inexplicable charm, although I know that's idiosyncratic and would totally respect the opinion of anyone who thought it sucked.)

So to hastily return to something a bit funkier, try:

Can I get your hand to write on
Just a piece of lead to bite on
What am I to fly my kite on
Do you want to flash your light on
Take a look its on display - for you
Coming down no not today
(2000s)

Actually, I did have to google for Ossenfeffer, if not for Katzenellenbogen who wrote one of my A-level history textbooks.

Well, not _techinically_ a textbook, I suppose. One of those huge bulky boring things about Imperial Germany that a person who really cared about history would have read cover-to-cover for background, but which I used by means of judicious use of the index.
