NTLJ chapter 39 at Chamber of Secrets

Just posted: chapter 39, Old Sins Cast Long Shadows. In which Tonks finally gets a theory about who 'the Butler' was, and gets at cross-purposes with Cassius, who has a revelation of his own.

I noticed when I posted it that it's been three years to the day since I joined CoS Forums, which means three years of actively being a part of the HP fandom (as opposed to merely browsing MuggleNet and so on). I don't know whether to be astonished that the time span has been so short, or alarmed that it's been so long. :D

Chapter 37 has been submitted to FictionAlley, but as the system appears to be a bit flaky there at the moment I'm not sure when it will appear.

That was a great chapter! Not funny, not light romance, but it's good to see that everything is getting together and that the Hallendales were not put in the story just for decoration.

Thanks -- yeah, a contrast to the previous chapter, come to think of it. With the Hallendales, I was actually worried people would find it too obvious that they had a bigger role to play, which is why I tried to downplay them for the first part of the story.

And, yay - new chapter! It's a good one, too - I always get totally absorbed in your chapters, and the end invariably comes too soon, but it's a very strong ending at that (excellent tension and drama in the final 'scene') and I'm very much looking forward to the next one.

Thanks! I wasn't sure whether this was the best place to end it (Cassius storming off leads directly into the next sequence) but the next chapter needed some lead-in too ...

Thanks. I had a nasty feeling someone would spot it, even when I tried to bury it early on -- but if anyone else did, they didn't say so ... And it took me a while to realise that the ending was sadder than I'd originally planned (although I should be able to end on a positive note, at least).

I couldn't get CoS to open last time you posted a chapter, so had a very enjoyable double helping this time. As you say, quite a contrast between the two. Poor Cassius... I am now wanting to think that I had a feeling there was something odd about the Hallendales, but I think I'm just being wise after the event!

Glad I was able to find out what the lyrics were, too. I just had the snatch of music stuck in my head and couldn't remember who it was by!

Thanks -- the ending is perhaps rather downbeat, but the looking-towards-OotP epilogue should round it off positively, I hope. :)
