Notts County did NOT get relegated from the Football League!
*cue cheering, release of balloons etc*
One of my rare non-HP posts below the cut. :)
If you were wondering what this is about, I should explain that although I live in Torquay I was born in Nottingham, and Notts County -- the oldest club in football -- are my team (that means 'soccer', for anyone under the strange impression that football is played with an oval ball). I'm quite happy to support Torquay as long as they're not playing County, although there is some resentment against them among United supporters going back to a League Cup tie in 1979. But that's another story.
Damn, it was an odd season. I actually got to see the Magpies(*) play live for the first time in years -- the opening match of the season was against Torquay United 'away' (although not for me). It was a 0-0 draw but both teams played decently, and for four weeks early on we were actually top of League Two and things were looking promising.
As it happened, we drew Torquay away in the FA Cup so I got to see them again. Not so good -- we lost 2-1 in a game of absolutely dire quality. Things drifted in the League as well for both teams; Torquay looked dead and buried as far as relegation out of the League was concerned a few weeks ago, but still, County seemed safe, and although we lost last week Torquay won to give themselves a really good chance of staying up. I was pleased until I 'did the maths' and realised County were now in serious danger of relegation themselves. :(
And so to some horrible tension watching the scores go by on TV on the last day of the season today. The main hope was that promotion-chasing Leyton Orient would beat Oxford United -- meaning their relegation and saving everybody else the trouble of getting an actual result -- or that Stockport would lose to champions Carlisle.
Unfortunately, Oxford-Orient was poised at 2-2, County went 2-0 down at home to fellow strugglers Bury with ten minutes left, and one more Oxford goal and we were down ... Cue considerable relief as County first scored two late goals to equalise, keeping us ahead of Stockport, then Orient got a last-minute winner at Oxford!
YES!!! We stayed up! (Oh yeah, Torquay did as well.)
Notts County have had their problems over the last few seasons, but as football fans everywhere say -- hopefully things will get better next year. :D

(*) So nicknamed because we play in black and white stripes. Trivia note: Juventus do the same because an early chairman nicked the idea after seeing County play.
