At least in regard to style and plot sleight-of-hand -- keeping the rabbits he's about to pull out of the hat not so much up his sleeve, as out on the table munching lettuce in full view, so you don't think they're important?

I have to admit I haven't seen Only Fools in a while so I couldn't say for sure! I often think he's like David Renwick (but John Sullivan fits with this too) in that he doesn't write down to his audience. He assumes they will be bright enough to keep up without big flashing signposts and constant reminders, which is something that infuriates me about modern writing, in both books and TV. That's why I like the stuff of all three of them.

Mm, good point. When you look back over the episodes, you can spot the clues, but you have to work at them at bit.
