Yeah -- I tend to find music rather distracting when writing unless it's purely instrumental, but this has a sort of gentle random feel. :)

If you like that, you might enjoy the CPRE's Sounds of Tranquility CD. Sadly not free though and not with lovely rain-down-window graphic, but I like it as work/writing background. (Like you, I find it hard to work to music, though in the office I sometimes need something more than rain or birds to block out background noise from colleagues).

I don't mind background noise actually -- although my colleagues all seem to have earphones or headphones. come to think of it. Possibly to blot out the sound of me cursing when bugs appear. :)

I don't mind background noise when it's a general hubbub, but I find it very difficult to shut out conversations that are happening next to me, or very loud shouts and laughter from the jolly team at the other end of the office. For same reason I can't have TV on as background - it draws my attention so either I'm watching it or it's off.

Oddly, background TV or conversation is OK for me, if it's not a programme I'm especially interested in while waiting for something else to come on. Presumably because it doesn't have the regularity of music.
