A few random thoughts:

On the whole, it looks promising. Dare I say it looks as if it's going to be more like an old-school Doctor Who serial in which things build slowly over several episodes and you really haven't a clue what's going on after the first couple of them? The aliens were all very Close Encounters and old style space probes. (Would be nice if the 1965 connection harked back to something in one of the old b&w serials, but I doubt it will.)

I suppose Jack's daughter and Gwen's pregnancy were fairly obvious thematic elements to include given the whole 'children' setup, and the first was something I'd been wondering about (given how much Jack gets about, you'd imagine he must have a few offspring scattered here and there, unless Torchwood had a Very Safe Sex gadget). Still, both a surprise when RTD actually threw them in. You kind of expect bad things to happen here, though.

Jack and Ianto worrying about couplehood -- awww! And some examination of how people react to them, which was interesting to see. And, um, WNGWJLEO is canon now (on Ianto's part, anyway, Jack just doesn't care)? Que?

RTD has his Issues going again, I see. I'm not even going to try to enumerate all the dodgy bits, as they might play out better than expected, although I'm not sure where he's going with the CoCs literally all getting killed off thing (even if the doctor might possibly be an alien in disguise). The woman/possible alien in charge seems on the evidence so far to be yet another standard villainess to add to his list. (And if even I'm noticing these things now, they must be fairly noticeable.)

Pity Freema has now transferred to ITV. It would have been nice to see her here. And yay, she married Tom! Doubt we're actually going to see her again, mind you, because of said transfer ...

Not even a shoutout to Sarah Jane in the list of people with useful powers? Shame on you, UNIT. Or maybe Mr Smith is just better at hiding than Torchwood is. They couldn't be a lot more public if they rode round Cardiff in SUVs with TOP SECRET ORGANISATION on the side in big letters.

How come no-one's thought to give the Doctor a bell, then? This is just his sort of thing normally.

ETA stuff I forgot/just thought of: it was fun to see we've finally done the obvious and gone into totally AU territory with everyone having noticed all the alien invasions. Because the 21st century is where everything changes, y'know. The producers do have a Giant Reset Switch o'Doom available by delving into the Time War, although they can't use it too much without getting fans of the show so far irate. (They might well use it for some things though -- e.g. retconning the Giant Cyberman in The Next Doctor.)

Also, for a speculation, how about the bunch at the hospital being what's left of original Torchwood, or a rogue branch thereof? This whole thing seems to be due to some big Government conspiracy, and there cold-blooded killer approach does seem in line with what we've seen of TW One.
