Right then. I was wondering why 8.02 was specified in The Sound of Drums as the key time when things kick off, and couldn't think of anything sensible. If anyone else has thought of anything sensible, please let me know.
However, that said, since Russell T. Davies does like his meta-clues (Professor Yana, Mister Saxon = Master No Six) and referrals back to obscure old-school serials (Macra!) I started wondering what the second serial of season 8 was.
It turns out it's The Mind of Evil, a Three six-parter in which the Master is stuck on Earth too, and working some scheme that involves a machine containing an alien mind parasite that feeds on evil impulses and kills by hallucination. According to the Outpost Gallifrey summary, it also has the Master phoning the Doctor at the end after having restored his TARDIS, and promising to destroy the Earth some day.
Coincidence? I THINK NOT.
Well all right, it almost certainly is coincidence. But The Mind of Evil does have a number of amusing parallels, eh? :)
As for the 'Toclafane', well, they're probably either (1) Time Lord brain patterns downloaded from the Matrix from a parallel universe and/or before Gallifrey went boom, (2) one of those alternate human forms mentioned by the Doctor in Utopia, or (3) the Utopia Flight people in special effect form. Hey, their story has to turn up again at some point, right? Very possibly in the next series, although the 'impending darkness' and 'paradox machine' bits would fit this, a la the loopback paradox in Red Dwarf which has the human race sort of circling round in time in the form of Dave Lister. Although it would be fun if they turned out to be (4) Vardans from The Invasion of Time, de-Time Looped and very pissed off.
