Yes, that's probably the thing about HBP -- it's very much a part of a series rather than a tale in its own right.
There are good slash stories about, but when it comes to pairing off random characters X and Y without regard to anything other than the slash as an end in itself (James/Remus, say) it's pretty much bound to be contrived.
