Book meme

Seen various places, but just now posted by [livejournal.com profile] spoonfuloftears:

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don’t you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
6. Tag five people.
[As always, do it if you feel like it -- lots of people have already]

I'm only doing it because (for once!) said volume isn't a bloody HP book (every time I put them back on the shelf, I keep having to get them out again to look something up). Although it's definitely not "cool" or "intellectual", and since page 123 lands right in the middle of some dialogue it may not make much sense:

The Case of the Sunbather's Diary by Erle Stanley Gardner:

"Did you get the number of that cab?"
"I did. Yes sir. That was part of my report."
"What was the number of that cab?"
"245."

Oh all right, technically that's six sentences. This is Hamilton Burger interrogating a witness before the grand jury in an attempt to trap Perry Mason in what Burger thinks was perjury, except it wasn't because ol' Hammy hadn't worded his questions to Perry quite right. :)

And another kinds sorta memey idea, shamelessly nicked from [livejournal.com profile] modestyrabnott: some song lyrics and a decade, answer next time.

"Father wears his Sunday best
Mother's tired she needs a rest, the kids are playing up downstairs
Sister's sighing in her sleep
Brother's got a date to keep, he can't hang around"
(1980s)
