Haven't been around much on LJ recently, for a number of reasons, largely apathy. One major reason for this is that living out of a suitcase in the London suburbs gets pretty isolating and depressing after a while, as does making long commutes at weekends. (You wouldn't think that Devon to West Norwood would be a seven hour journey, but it can be if the train's running late and you miss the last Tube connection ...) With that (and other frustrations) I've lacked the energy or motivation to even sit down and type out any of the dozen or so things I thought of posting about, let alone make a start on writing some of the fic ideas I still have in the pending tray. I have a tendency to snap at people at the moment, especially today when I had a sequence of people being pains in the arse one after the other.

HOWEVER ... I now have a flat swap arranged and am due to move up to Hammersmith this coming weekend. I've really missed having all my stuff around me (well, except at weekends when I haven't had time to settle in and do much with it), not to mention missing a comfortable bed to sleep in and a comfortable chair to sit and type things in. Of course, I have the unpacking to look forward to ...

Regarding things I might have posted about, I believe there was an election or something taking place on the other side of the pond while I was away, and the sensible guy won? I feel kind of like the way I did when Labour won in 1997 -- some relief tempered with much flatness at the fact that the party had clearly already tacked further right than needed. Obama is very impressive, and sounds competent in that good way that doesn't need to shout about it. He was clearly way better than McCain, who's not so much a maverick as a loose cannon (although somehow 46% of voting Americans supported the latter, which isn't an encouraging statistic -- party loyalty is one thing, but this is silly). And I think we can say with confidence that he's going to be better than Bush, but that's so low a bar you could step over it without breaking stride. The key test is whether he can do better than that other smart, charismatic, and vaguely leftish leader, T.Blair ...

To all the people whose birthdays I've missed commenting on: belated good wishes. Blimey.

Lyrics: And for something to add: the last one was that old standard Fever, recorded by loads of people, although the best known is probably Peggy Lee's classic 1958 version which still sounds outstanding after half a century. Spotted by [livejournal.com profile] tree_and_leaf and [livejournal.com profile] golden_d.

So try this one, because frankly the theme is such as to suit my mood recently:

I used to be such a sweet, sweet thing
Till they got a hold of me
I opened doors for little old ladies
I helped the blind to see
I got no friends 'cause they read the papers
They can't be seen with me
And I'm gettin' real shot down
And I'm feelin' mean ...

Great to hear from you again! I'm glad everything's OK, apart from the housing - and I'm very glad that's going to be sorted soon. Trying to find somewhere to live is pretty soul-destroying, even in a normal-sized city...
